AC Installation & Replacement in Bergen & Essex County, NJ

A properly sized, properly installed system cools better and lasts longer than an expensive one installed badly.

  • Licensed & Insured
  • Same-Day Service
  • No Worries Pricing
  • Family Owned & Operated

Heights Plumbing, Heating & Cooling installs and replaces central air conditioning systems for homes across Northern New Jersey — cape cods, colonials, split-levels, condos and everything in between. We size the system to your house, not to whatever was there before.

We have a mechanical engineer and an electrical engineer on staff, so heat gain calculations, custom system design and the wiring are all handled in house rather than subcontracted. We are family owned and operated with 56 years of industry experience, and financing is available through Synchrony.

Replacing an AC System Is Easy to Get Wrong

Most homeowners are told two things: pick a brand, and pick a tonnage that matches the old unit. Neither is the part that determines whether you are comfortable. An oversized system short-cycles, which means it cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has pulled moisture out, and leaves the house cold and clammy — a real problem in humid Northern New Jersey summers.

The other half is the install itself. Duct connections that leak, a line set that was never properly evacuated, an evaporator coil mismatched to the condenser, or electrical that is marginal for the new equipment will undercut even good equipment. That is why we start with a load calculation and finish by verifying the system performs the way it was designed to.

What Our AC Installation Includes

Before we quote anything, we measure. Our engineers run a heat gain calculation on your actual home — square footage, ceiling heights, window area and orientation, insulation, and how the ductwork is laid out — to determine the right capacity. We also look at the existing ducts and electrical service, since both can limit what a new system is capable of delivering.

On installation day we remove the old equipment, set the new condenser on a level pad or bracket, install a matched indoor coil and air handler or furnace coil, run and properly evacuate the line set, make the condensate and drain connections with a safety switch, and handle the electrical ourselves — disconnect, whip, breaker and thermostat wiring. Then we commission the system: verify charge by weight, check superheat and subcooling, measure airflow, confirm the temperature split, and walk you through the thermostat before we leave. Permits and inspections are handled where the municipality requires them.

Signs It Is Time to Replace Your AC

  • The system is 15 years old or more
  • A major repair costs a large share of a new system
  • Refrigerant leaks keep coming back
  • Cooling bills climb every summer
  • Some rooms never get comfortable
  • The house stays humid even when it is cool
  • The unit is loud enough to hear indoors
  • Repair parts for your model are getting hard to source

Our AC Installation Process

  1. In-home assessment

We look at the existing equipment, ductwork, electrical panel and the rooms that give you trouble, and listen to what has not been working.

  2. Load calculation and design

Our engineers run a heat gain calculation and design the system around your home, including any duct or airflow corrections it needs.

  3. Clear proposal

You get equipment options at different efficiency levels with a firm price for each, plus Synchrony financing if you want to spread it out.

  4. Professional installation

Old equipment removed, new system set, line set evacuated, condensate handled, and all electrical work done by our own team. Permits pulled where required.

  5. Commissioning and walkthrough

We verify charge, airflow and temperature split, then show you the thermostat, the filter location and the maintenance schedule.

AC System Options We Offer

Single-stage central air

The straightforward option: full capacity when it runs. Lowest cost to install, and a solid fit for smaller homes and simple duct layouts.

Two-stage and variable-capacity systems

These run at lower output most of the time, which means longer, gentler cycles and much better humidity control through a Northern NJ August.

Higher-SEER2 efficiency equipment

SEER2 is the current federal efficiency rating. Higher-rated equipment costs more up front and uses less electricity per season. We show you the tradeoff honestly rather than pushing the top of the line.

AC and furnace replaced together

When both are near end of life, replacing them as a matched set avoids paying twice for labor and ensures the coil, blower and controls work together.

Heat pump conversion

A heat pump cools like an air conditioner and heats efficiently in shoulder seasons. Worth considering if you are replacing anyway or want to reduce fuel use.

Ductless for homes without ducts

If running duct through an older home is impractical, a ductless mini split system delivers the same cooling without tearing up ceilings.

AC Installation & Replacement FAQs

How do you decide what size system my home needs?

With a heat gain calculation, not a rule of thumb. Our engineers factor in square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height and duct layout. Matching the old unit is not a reliable method, especially if the house has been insulated or added onto.

How long does a central AC replacement take?

A straightforward changeout is typically one day. Jobs that involve ductwork modifications, electrical upgrades or a difficult equipment location can run into a second day. We tell you which one yours is before we start.

Do you handle the electrical work?

Yes. We have an electrical engineer on staff and our team does our own wiring for system installs — disconnects, whips, breakers and thermostat wiring — so there is no separate contractor to coordinate.

What is SEER2 and how high should I go?

SEER2 is the federal seasonal efficiency rating for cooling equipment. Higher numbers use less electricity but cost more up front. For most Northern New Jersey homes the sensible range is somewhat above the minimum, and we will show you the actual difference for your usage.

Should I worry about the refrigerant transition?

New systems are moving to lower-global-warming refrigerants. Whatever we install will be current equipment that is fully supported. If your existing system uses an older refrigerant, it remains serviceable — it is a factor in timing a replacement, not an emergency.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, where the municipality requires them. Permit and inspection requirements vary town to town across North Jersey, and we handle the filing as part of the job.
