Water Softeners FAQs
Do I actually need a softener in North Jersey?
It depends on your specific supply. Hardness varies by town and by source. We test before recommending anything, and if your water does not warrant a softener we will say so.
Will softened water taste salty?
No. A properly set softener exchanges hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium. It does not make the water taste salty, though people on restricted sodium diets sometimes add a reverse osmosis tap for drinking.
Can you repair my softener instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. Control valves, floats and injectors can be serviced. Once the resin is exhausted or the unit is well past a decade, replacement is usually the better value.
Does a softener remove chlorine taste?
No. Softeners address hardness. For chlorine taste and odor you want carbon filtration, which we often install alongside the softener.
How much salt will it use?
That depends on your hardness, water use and whether the unit is metered. A correctly sized, metered softener uses noticeably less salt than an older timer-based unit.
