How often should a sump pump be replaced?
Service life is really measured in run time, not calendar years. A pump in a wet basement works far harder than one that runs a few times a season, so we judge it by condition and testing.
Do I need a battery backup?
If your basement is finished, or if you depend on the pump during major storms, it deserves serious thought. Power outages and heavy rain tend to arrive together.
Why does my pump run when it is not raining?
That usually points to groundwater rather than storm water. A high water table, a leaking line or poor exterior drainage can all keep the pit filling.
Can I test the pump myself?
Yes. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, clears the pit and shuts off cleanly. Doing that before storm season is a good habit.
Where should the discharge go?
Far enough from the foundation that the water does not soak back down to the pit, and never into the sanitary sewer, which most municipalities prohibit.
