How often should I change my AC filter?
A standard 1-inch pleated filter usually needs replacing every one to three months. Pets, construction dust and running the system hard all shorten that. Thick media filters typically go six months to a year.
Is a higher MERV rating always better?
No. Higher MERV captures smaller particles but restricts airflow more, and not every system is designed for it. The right answer is the highest rating your equipment and ductwork can handle without straining the blower.
Can a dirty filter really stop my AC from cooling?
Yes. Restricted airflow lets the evaporator coil drop below freezing, ice forms across it, and airflow stops almost completely. It is one of the most common causes of a summer no-cooling call.
