A humidistat — either at the unit or built into a compatible thermostat — controls the level automatically, and many adjust the target as the outdoor temperature drops to avoid condensation on windows.
Our installation covers all three connections: the duct opening and plenum mounting, a water supply line with a shutoff and, where the type calls for it, a drain, and the wiring and control tie-in to the furnace. We do the plumbing and the electrical ourselves rather than bringing in another trade. What humidity level should I set in winter?
Somewhere in the 30 to 40 percent range is comfortable for most homes, but the right setting drops as it gets colder outside. If you see condensation on the windows, the setting is too high for that day. Automatic controls handle this adjustment for you.
Does a whole-home humidifier use a lot of water?
Bypass and fan-powered units run water across a pad while the furnace is heating, and a portion goes down the drain. It is a modest amount relative to normal household use. Steam units use less water overall but more electricity.
Will it work if I have a boiler and radiators instead of a furnace?
Not the ducted type, because there is no duct system to distribute the moisture. Homes with hot water heat typically need steam units with a dedicated distribution method or standalone humidification. We will look at your setup and explain the realistic options.
How much maintenance does one need?
Once a year, at the start of the heating season. The evaporator pad or steam canister gets replaced and the water path and drain get cleaned. Northern New Jersey water leaves scale, so skipping it is the main reason humidifiers stop producing.
Can too much humidity cause problems?
Yes. Over-humidifying leads to condensation on windows and inside exterior walls, which can cause mold and damage. That is why the humidistat setting should come down as outdoor temperatures drop, and why we set it properly at installation.
